NS Virtual eXperience Lab at Dutch Design Week
NS (Dutch Railways) has developed a vision on the journey of tomorrow. The essence of it is travel time becoming personal time. In this context a new train interior design was developed in collaboration with Mecanoo Architects and Gispen.
NS asked me to create a public presentation at Dutch Design Week to show the new train interior design to the public, and collect response and feedback. I teamed up with Mecanoo and Gispen, and used their 3D computer models of the new interior to create a Virtual Reality model of the train in a station environment. Together with Enversed Studio we developed a VR Experience which was presented in the Journey of Tomorrow pavilion at DDW in Eindhoven.
The pavilion included a scaled train mock-up, info graphics and Google Cardboard viewers to see how the train interior looked in 360 degrees. Highlight was the Virtual Experience, where visitors could fit on HTC Vive Pro goggles and a powerful computer in a backpack, to literally walk from the station platform into the train – in VR. Virtual avatars were used, so visitors could walk around in the virtual train with 3 persons simultaneously – and see each other (and wave!).
